Chances are you’ve heard the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” once, twice or maybe a thousand times. Although it’s quite cliché, this pearl of wisdom is the entire basis of a popular concept called upcycling; taking used objects and giving them a new life as something useful or creative that is typically the same or better quality than the original item.

Not only is creating upcycled art a fun and creative way to reuse your items, but you’ll find that it has many benefits for your wallet and the earth. Here’s why you should consider upcycling for your next DIY art project:

1. Environmental Impact

Although recycling is always encouraged, upcycling is even better for the environment. When products are recycled, the material is broken down and turned into another product that is often of lesser value. Upcycling takes less energy and creates a product with equal or more value.

2. Create Unique Items

When you create upcycled art, you can use your imagination to make something no one else has! Upcycled art is not something you’ll find on the shelf at a department store, it has character and a story behind it, and it can be personalized to your taste.

3. Save Money

On top of all the other benefits, think of all the money you could save by reusing items you already have to create something you need rather than going and buying it!

4. Your Project Can Be Entered at the Ohio State Fair!

Most exciting of all, your upcycled art can be entered into the Artistic Upcycling competition during the State Fair for a chance to win up to $100. Although you have until June 14 to create your upcycled art, be sure to enter the competition by June 20 to be considered.

We encourage you to turn your trash into treasure! With a couple old objects and a little imagination, the possibilities are endless. Next time, think twice before throwing your items in the trash. After all, it’s a win-win for you and the earth, what’s not to like?
