The Ohio State Fair has two barn co-director positions open: Swine Barn Co-Director and Sheep Barn Co-Director
Responsibilities: What Does A Barn Director Do?
The Barn Director is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of barn operations for a particular species’ agricultural shows during the Ohio State Fair. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to coordinate with various stakeholders to ensure smooth execution of events.
Key Responsibilities
- Event Planning and Coordination
- Recruit judges and obtain verbal or written confirmation of their ability to serve as a judge.
- Collaborate with Fair management to set show schedules.
- Review and provide input on livestock rules from the perspective of their respective species.
- Coordinate with breed representatives for rule books, shows, and awards information.
- Administrative Tasks
- Review and submit awards orders, including sponsor information for billing purposes.
- Complete and submit setup forms and supply needs.
- Process ticket orders for the department.
- Review and edit exhibitor letters.
- Staff Management
- Recruit and manage barn staff.
- Collect and communicate staff requirements (e.g., shirt sizes, accommodations).
- On-site Show Management
- Oversee daily barn operations, including check-in, shows, and release.
- Manage on-site staff.
- Handle or escalate issues as needed.
- Communication and Reporting
- Submit graphic design or signage/printing requests to management.
- Suggest ideas for news releases, stories, and social media content.
- Address exhibitor inquiries or direct them to appropriate staff.
- Submit post-fair reports and evaluations to management.
- Budget and Inventory Management
- Review and submit awards orders, including for appropriate quantities and content on ribbons, rosettes, and banners.
- Manage supply needs and inventory.
Qualifications
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Experience in agricultural shows or fairs
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Familiarity with livestock and agricultural practices
