Red Velvet Swirl Brownies

Baking temperature: 350 degrees
Baking time: 30-40 minutes
Yield: 12-16 brownies


  • 2 Tbsp. butter, for the pan

Brownie layer

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. red food coloring
  • 2 tsp. vinegar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup chopped, toasted walnuts

Cream cheese layer:

  • 16 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract


  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Butter a 13 x 9 inch pan, set aside.

Brownie layer:

  • Melt the butter in a saucepan at medium heat.
  • Remove the butter to a large bowl and add the sugar, vanilla, cocoa powder, salt, food coloring and vinegar (in that order), mixing between additions.
  • Whisk the eggs in a small bowl and stir into the cocoa mix.
  • Fold in the flour until lightly combined.
  • Stir in the walnuts.
  • Pour all but 1/2 cup of the batter into the prepared pan, reserving the remaining 1/2 cup for the top.

Cream cheese layer:

  • Blend together the cream cheese, sugar, eggs, and vanilla in a medium bowl.
  • Gently spread the cream cheese layer onto the top of the brownie batter in pan.
  • Dollop the remaining brownie batter over the cream cheese layer.
  • Using the tip of a knife, drag the tip through the cream cheese mixture to create a swirl pattern.

Final steps

  • Bake the brownies for 30-40 minutes, or until they test done
  • Allow the brownies to cool completely before cutting.
