Bob Kendrick

Anchor, WSYX/WTTE – TV

Favorite grilled food: “RIBS”

You might recognize Bob Kendrick as the co-anchor for ABC6 News at 5 and 6 as well as Fox28 News at 10, but he has another title to add: ManBQue Competition Judge.

Bob’s passion for cooking started in the 1970s while working at fine dining restaurants. Bob says the acts of cooking and enjoying fine food and drink is constant in his life.

If you plan on making ribs, he is your guy! Bob is looking for attention to presentation and prep, but if you want to impress him, make a sauce that he hasn’t tried before, “Tangy – I like tangy. Maybe an Indian spice. Heat, but not anger.”

Bob’s advice: “Make the rib look pretty – I’m a sucker for presentation.”

Lisa Abraham

Food Editor, The Columbus Dispatch

Favorite grilled food: “I love barbecued ribs, but I’ll never turn away a classic grilled hot dog, with mustard, of course. Save the ketchup for the fries!”

Our next judge loves all things food related. Lisa Abraham is the Columbus Dispatch’s very own food editor! Lisa’s passion for food started at an early age as she watched her mother cook in the kitchen. Now, Lisa is right in on the action as her daily routine involves cooking, eating, talking and writing about food – making her the perfect judge for this competition!

As for the competition, you can expect this foodie to have high expectations. Lisa will be looking for well-prepared foods, strong flavors and meltingly tender meats.

Her advice: “Come well-prepared, lack of preparation always shows. Be safe, no one wants to worry about getting sick from grilled foods. Be prepared to wow me with your flavors!”

Lenny Kolada

Owner, Smokehouse Brewing Company

Favorite grilled food:A well-marbled rib-eye steak, about 1 ½ inches thick, is hard to beat. Unless it’s well done. Well done with catsup. Who would commit that sin against humanity?”

While Lenny loves good barbeque, he’s in the business for brew. Lenny said his passion for craft beers began in the 80s, little did he know, years later he would be a part of making his own.

Remember, recipes for this competition must contain a craft beer of your choice, and this will be the judge to impress. According to Lenny, microbrew and barbecue are a world-class food pairing that was born out of American Ingenuity, and that should be celebrated.

Something this judge would love to see? A competitor using Commonhouse Ales or something from Smokehouse Brewing Company. This would certainly rack up some brownie points, as Lenny is the owner of both brewing companies!

Lenny’s advice: “Don’t make mistakes! A competitor has a ton of time to plan for this event. Get your timing down and perfect your recipes. There’s only one thing to do at show time: Execute! If you’re stressed you won’t have fun. If you don’t have fun, why do it?”

Marcus Meacham

Celebrity Chef, Executive Chef, Latitude 41

Favorite grilled food:So many of my favorite foods are grilled. If it flies, swims, eats grass. Put them on my list of favorites. Right now my go to are dry aged rib-eyes.”

If you’ve eaten at the top restaurants in Columbus, chances are you’ve had the delicious opportunity to try food made by this celebrity chef (turned celebrity judge)! Marcus Meacham is a self-taught culinary guru who has worked in several local Columbus Restaurants including Bodega and Latitude 41.

Marcus is looking for great presentation, well-executed technique, taste and the ability to be clean. If you want to really impress him, create a new flavor that he hasn’t thought of himself.

His advice: “Have a plan, and be able to adjust that plan on the fly. Quickly and accurately.”
