OHIO EXPOSITIONS COMMISSION ANNOUNCES
2014 OHIO STATE FAIR HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Expositions Commission and the Ohio State Fair are proud to announce the induction of six members into the Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame. The Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame was created in 1976 and recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Fair. The inductees are as follows:

  • Charles “Charlie” Andrews, Fayette County
  • Jeffrey Dillion, Franklin County
  • Scott Higgins, Licking County
  • Luis Perez, Franklin County
  • George Schmidt (posthumously), Franklin County
  • Jack Tongring, Lucas County

Charles “Charlie” Andrews has supported the Fair for 64 years, 23 of which have been served as an employee of the Fair. Beginning in 1956, Andrews showed hogs at the Fair before transitioning to swine judging. He currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent in the swine department and has done so for the past 18 years.

Jeffrey Dillion began working for the Ohio State Fair in 1975 as student summer help. He became a full-time employee in 1977 and now oversees the landscaping and groundskeeping program, the WCOL Celeste Center during the Fair and ice maintenance for youth hockey activities at the Ohio Expo Center.

Scott Higgins has served as President and CEO of American Dairy Association Mideast since 1986, where he has championed for Ohio’s dairy industry. He remains a supporter of 4-H, FFA and the Sale of Champions. Higgins also holds leadership and advisory positions with multiple regional charities.

Luis Perez began working as a summer student employee at the Ohio State Fair in 1977 before becoming a full-time employee in 1978. Years of service and multiple promotions brought Perez to the Assistant General Manager position in 2004, where his knowledge and length of service have garnered respect from the departments he oversees and numerous vendors, concessionaires and amusement industry professionals across the country.

George Schmidt exemplifies lifelong dedication to the Ohio State Fair. Beginning at age 10 until his passing in April 2013, Schmidt was involved with and ran the oldest concession stand at the Fair, Schmidt’s of German Village. George is remembered for his affection for the All-Ohio State Fair Band, who annually serenaded him with “Happy Birthday,” and as the hardworking head of five generations of living Schmidts.

Jack Tongring has served the Ohio State Fair and Ohio’s youth unselfishly for 30 years as the Assistant Director of the All-Ohio State Fair Band. He is a driving force behind the music provided for thousands of fairgoers each year and has worked tirelessly to expand the band’s repertoire over the years.

Well-known Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame inductees include former governors James Rhodes, George Voinovich and Frank Lausche; former Speaker of the House Vern Riffe; Bob Evans Farms founder Bob Evans and Former Wendy’s President R. David Thomas.
