Nine Quirky Ohio State Fair Competitions

What do bowling pins, watermelon seeds, tattoos and duct tape all have in common? They’re all part of competitions offered at the Ohio State Fair! Here is a list of nine quirky Fair competitions that cater to different, and sometimes unusual, interests and talents.

1) Old Familiar Beard Bash Competition
Event held on Monday, Aug. 3, from 2:30 – 4 pm in the centrally located ShowPlace Pavilion. Registration is from 12 – 2:30 pm. 

The beard bash and moustache competition brings together the best beardsmen from across the Midwest to compete for the respect of their bearded brothers.  With several different categories, including a fake beard category, anyone can compete to show off their fantastic follicles! 2) Egg Eating Challenge
Event held on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 3 pm on the Creative Arts Center Stage. Pre-registration begins at 9 am at the Creative Arts Welcome Desk in the Rhodes Creative Arts Center

This competition is only for “eggcellent” eaters. Fairgoers can take a crack at this year’s egg eating challenge! Participants will have one minute to eat as many hard-boiled eggs as possible. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and sign a liability waiver to compete. The winner will be immortalized on the Creative Arts Challenge Champion Board and will receive a ribbon to commemorate their incredible ingestion. 3) Artistic Upcycling Competition
Entry Deadline is June 20 and items must be delivered by July 17 (4 pm – 8 pm) and 18 (11 am – 7 pm)

Do you have a knack for recycling old items for new, creative uses? If so, the upcycling competition is right up your alley. Contestants can create a decorative item, small furniture, wearable art or, new this year, a repurposed door or recycled bowling pin! Deadline for entry is June 20. 4) Duct Tape Art
Entry Deadline is June 20 and items must be delivered by July 17 (4 pm – 8 pm) and 18 (11 am – 7 pm)

We’ve all heard that duct tape fixes everything, but did you know it can make things too? Find out what all this sticky stuff can do during this year’s duct tape art contest. Participants can create an outfit or garment, accessories, flowers and more. Entries will be judged based on the quantity of duct tape used, creativity and originality, color and presentation. 5) Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest
Event held on Monday, Aug. 3, at 1 pm outside the Rhodes Creative Arts Center. Pre-registration begins at 9 am at the Creative Arts Welcome Desk.

The current world record for watermelon spitting is 68 feet 9 and 1/8 inches! Think you can beat it? Come to the watermelon seed spitting contest where participants will compete against other spectacular spitters to see who can get the small seed to travel the furthest. Three heats will take place with age divisions of 6-11, 12-17 and 18 and up. Keep in mind that you must pre-register on the morning of the competition to compete. 6) Ohio’s Best Tattoo Competition
Event held on Monday, Aug. 3, from 5 – 7:30 pm in the Showplace Pavilion. Registration is from 12 – 3:30 pm.

The Fair invites tattoo artists and inked individuals from across the state to compete in Ohio’s Best Tattoo Competition. The event will showcase incredible ink and determine who is wearing the state’s most wonderful work of body art. Several different categories are offered based on the type of tattoo. 7) Aramark “Chopped” Cook-Off
Event held on Saturday, Aug. 8, 1 – 6 pm in the Rhodes Creative Arts Center. The competition will take place from 1 – 2 pm with judging taking place from 2 – 6 pm. Participants must register by June 20.

Think you’ve got what it takes not to be “Chopped”? For this intense cooking competition, contestants will bring only 10 of their favorite ingredients along with two mystery ingredients provided at the competition onsite that must be used to create culinary masterpieces. This two-round competition will challenge both junior and amateur chefs to make, bake and create in a high-pressure environment. Will you be “Chopped”? 8) Ice Cream Eating Competition
Event held on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 3 pm in the Rhodes Creative Arts Center. Pre-registration begins at 9 am at the Creative Arts Welcome Desk.

Take your sweet tooth to the next level in this frozen fun competition. Velvet Ice Cream is sponsoring this event where participants will compete to see who can eat the most ice cream! $350 in coupons will be awarded to the winners. More information can be found here.

 

9) Food Carving Competition
Event held on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 1 pm in the Rhodes Creative Arts Center. Participants must register by June 20.

Food artists of all experience levels are invited to compete in the fruit carving competition! The Fair is currently seeking talented professional and amateur food artists and chefs to compete in the food sculpting competition in which they will transform food into magnificent art. Fairgoers can witness ordinary fruit and vegetables being transformed into unbelievable sculptures! More information can be found here.
